Miss Grace Van Benthuy-

N. Ye sures
“4 year ago I ordered
from you about 40 Tulips
and as many Narcissi. I
planted them quite deep
and all came up fine. The
Narcissus buibs all had two
blossoms each. I was very
pleased with them, and
also with the three dozen
Crocus bulbs, which were
planted in the front lawn.
These were much admired
by passersby.”

this opportunity to express
my complete satisfaction

Newark, Ohio, writes:
“We have bought Tulips
from you before—and many
thanks for spreading Joy
and happiness in your own
special way. We attended
the Festival two years ago
and took colored moving
pictures of the gardens and
they are our special pride
and joy. Several folks have
gone to the Festival just
because they have seen our
beautiful pictures.”

The modern Giant May-Flowering Tulip is the result of three separate
experiments of Tulip breeding, formerly classified as Darwin, Cottage and
Breeder Tulips.
Through the inter-breeding of the three before-mentioned
classes, the terms Darwin, Cottage (or Hybrid) and Breeder Tulips still
listed in some catalogs have become so confusing that even among the best
informed there are many clashes of opinion.
Since the modern Giant May-
Flowering Tulips contain the blood of all the three preceding crosses in
proportions unknown to even the plant breeders themselves, it seems useless
and scientifically meaningless.

“My daughter from Wil-

of your beautiful red Tulips,

everyone who saw them.
They are far superior to any

here in California.”
Mrs. Harry A. Kaiser of Chicago, Ill., writes:
“I have been ordering from you for four years now
and have been very happy with all results. I have also
purchased Tulips and Daffodils for use as gifts. I had
the privilege of visiting your Tulip farm in 1948 and
the beauty of so many Tulips is something out of this
world.”

These wild Tulips come in lovely odd shapes, many with reflexed petals
and curiously twisted and reflexed foliage. They belong in the rock
garden where they thrive and increase if left in the ground from year to
year. Plant them in groups of six to twelve bulbs among the rocks in
fairly well drained pockets. We have eliminated all varieties of inferior
and poor blooming qualities, and only those varieties that have given
satisfaction under American conditions have been listed.

In order to have a beautiful bulb garden, Narcissi should be
planted freely. They thrive in practically any climate in the United
States, and are not only excellent: for outdoors, but millions are used
every year for forcing indoors. Their graceful form, exquisitely
shaped cups and trumpets, and long, straight stems have made them
favorites for cut flower purposes with every American gardener. We
have added many new varieties to the old favorites. For a real
revelation, you should try some of the new types. They are really
exquisite.
The Botanical terms: Incomparabilis, Leedsi and Barri, formerly used to classify
Narcissi have been discontinued, becaus2, through the cross-breeding of the different
varicties, it is now almost impossible to judge which Narcissi belong in which
classifications. The nine new classifications listed below will be easier to understand:
(1) Trumpet Narcissi: trumpet long or longer than perianth segments. May be
self-colored or bi-colered.
(2) Long-Cupped Narcissi.
(3) Short-Cupped Narcissi.
(4) Double Narcissi.
(5) Triandrus Narcissi: three or more bell-shaped flowers per stem,
(6) Jonquil Narcissi: three or more small flowers per stem. Flowers buttercup-
yellow, and very fragrant. Long, rushlike foliage.
(7) Poetaz Narcissi: cluster-flowering type, with 6 to 12 flowers per stem.
(8) Poeticus Narcissi: having white perianth with red eye. Always fragrant.
(9) Species and wild forms.

WONDER BULB
The only bulbs that will bloom indoors
without soil! — without water! — without care!
Place it, just as it is, on the mantel, window ledge or table, and with
practically no further attention on your part, it will reward you with its
exquisitely lovely bloom. Use these bulbs for gifts. They attract immediate
attention, and the usefulness of the bulb does not end when the blossoms
fade. Plant them outdoors, and in the spring will appear the luxuriant green
foliage. Dig up the bulbs after the foliage has died down, take them
indoors to repeat this marvelous feat of Nature!

Spanish Iris. Its main value lies in the fact that it can be forced into

a 4- to 5-inch pot when received, will bloom about Christmas time.
The fragrant blooms remind one of a bunch of fresh Violets. Perfectly

Autumn Glourering iis
(Flowering Two or More Times Each Season—Both Spring and Fall.)
We take great pleasure in offering this list of the finest fall bloomers in culti-
vation. While best results are secured with these Iris below the Mason-Dixon
Line, with a little care we have obtained excellent fall bloom in Michigan. Some
of the varieties listed not only bloom profusely early in the spring, but under
favorable conditions also produce crop after crop of flowers in late summer and
fall. There are as yet comparatively few of these Iris in existence, and the
demand has been so great that we, as well as the few growers of fall bloomers,
could fill only a small portion of the orders received last year. Please order early.

New Economy Brand Peat Moss
Nature’s Way to a Productive Soil
This new Economy Brand Peat Moss is being produced by the Sun-Aerating
Process, or in other words, is ‘‘sun-dried”. Practically all of the water has been
removed by nature, thereby making a decided saving in freight charges. Put up
in bags, each containing two bushels of Peat, the weight has now been reduced
to an average of about 30 pounds per bag, allowing us to ship 3 bags, or 6
bushels, for the minimum freight rates.
Possibly still more weight could have been eliminated by oven drying, but
through this method, the Peat loses much of its mineral texture and value.
New Economy Brand Peat Moss is pure vegetable matter, called Humus. It
improves light soil by giving it more body—one pound of dry Peat will hold
sixteen pounds of water—and also gives life and porousness to heavy soils.
New Economy Brand Peat Moss is also an excellent mulch. A layer of the
loose, fluffy material on top of the ground will greatly check evaporation.
Applied from one to three inches deep it will conserve soil moisture and prevent
erosion. In winter it protects plant and roots from severe cold.
co)
New Economy Brand Peat Moss is sold in bags containing two bushels. We
will ship by freight, charges collect. Shipping weight of three bags approxi-
mately 100 pounds. As freight companies have a minimum charge of 100
pounds, we advise ordering no less than three bags.
